Coming into the second game of the season at the Arch, and third on the season for the Cougars, every game was won by the Home team in the league thus far. Even with little to no fans in the building Home ice was king. Until Thursday night.
The Panthers took the last contest last Friday night, and they carried the momentum into Thursday. For about 75% of the 1st period it was all Peninsula. The Cougars managed to get shots, but not a lot of quality shots. The shots that counted were all from the Panthers. Logan Speirs opened the scoring early with Owen Evers in the box for slashing. A long low shot and a fantastic tip out front. 1-0 Panthers. Then about 10 minutes later, the best line in the league struck again. After a 2 on 1 that had Chambers make the first save, but couldn’t find the loose puck. Wort from his knees was able to bat the puck in for a 2-0 lead.
Wort would grab his 2nd of the game and 4th on the year early in the 2nd period, and it looked like a Panthers run-away. But the Cougars wouldn’t go away. Collecting 20 shots on goal in the period the Cougars were able to bury 3 unanswered. First was Spencer Golden with his 2nd of the year on weird goal. What looked like a shot that went post to post and out, was called a good goal the referee standing beside the net. My angle was obstructed but the official didn’t hesitate. Bryce Irwin would bring the home team within 1 on a short-handed 2 on 1. Much like the Wort goal in the 1st, the puck was left in the blue paint and buried. Lastly, Ethan Roworth with his first Junior goal. A pure power-forward move up the right side he was able to fend of the defence and squeak the puck between goalie and post. The game was tied going into the final frame.
The 3rd period didn’t solve anything, and we needed an extra frame. Matthew Seale ended the game at 2:31 of Overtime after he had two Cougars between him and the net, and Chambers could not see his wrist shot from the right side.
Next up is game 4 of the cohort series. 730pm in Peninsula on Friday.
Shots were 42-34 Cougars
