The Victoria Cougars made the drive out the Peninsula to take on the Panthers at the Panorama Leisure Centre Friday night. This was game 7 in a 10 game Cohort Series. Both teams were playing with depleted rosters especially on defence.
The first period saw an evenly played period with shots in favour of the Cougars 12-9 and no scoring. Both teams had 2 power plays but the penalty kills were perfect.
In the second the Panthers started to run into penalty problems with Owen Cox taking a check from behind minor which has an automatic game misconduct. This took one more player off the Panthers bench. At 9:56 Lucas Thomson-Fiddes also took a check from behind minor further shortening the Panthers bench. The Cougars controlled most of the period out shooting the Panthers 18-4 but couldn’t put the puck past Panthers goalie Brayden Evans until the 18:05 mark when Owen Evers took a Simon Pollock pass at the point and fired the puck at the net. It tipped off a defender stick and into the net to give Evers his first Jr. goal and the Cougars a1-0 lead. Second assist went to Cougars captain Cam LeSergent. One minute and 36 seconds later and Evers was at it again getting his second goal with assists going to Ryan Strange and Tory McClintick. The period ended with the Cougars up 2-0.
Early in the third period the Panthers were pressing and put the puck towards the net. Cougars goalie Jonah Chambers used his stick and pushed the puck past the Panther players to Ryan Strange who took the puck down the right wing, cut in front of the net and out waited Evans and put it in the net. The goal was listed as unassisted but hopefully they’ll look at the video and award Chambers with the goalie point. The Panthers pushed back hard but the Cougars and Chambers were up to the task. Late in the game Panthers rookie Aleko Sdrakas was in on a breakaway and Cougar veteran Bryce Irwin hustled hard to catch him and take away a scoring chance and help preserve the shutout for Chambers. The two goalies were the Players of the game but Owen Evers deserves honourable mention.
The two teams will be at it again on Sunday afternoon at the Archie Browning Arena. Puck drop will be 3:30
